When to Start Buying Pregnancy Clothes

Posted on 1/01/2022 in Style

So, you just found out you’re pregnant – congratulations!

Pregnancy is such a beautiful time, although it’s not without its challenges - like what do you do when none of your clothes fit anymore?

Lucky for you, we’re the experts in all things maternity wear, and we have a few insights that you may find helpful. You don’t have to spend a ton of money on your maternity wardrobe, but it is worth investing in a few key pieces.

When Should you Start Buying Maternity Clothes?

If you’ve been through pregnancy before, you’ll already have a few pregnancy-friendly pieces in your wardrobe, and you’ll have a bit of an idea of the styles and brands you like. If this is your first pregnancy, however, you may be a little daunted by all the options that are out there.

The good news: gone are the days where your options consisted of baggy t-shirts, jean expanders and making do with the next size up in singlet tops. Today’s maternity wear is designed to grow with you, and comes in a wide range of flattering styles, gorgeous patterns and on-trend colours, designed to support your body rather than cover it up!

Some women begin wearing maternity clothes from as early as 9 weeks, simply for the comfort factor. While you may not be ready to transition your wardrobe that early, the first trimester is a good time to be thinking ahead and getting organised. There’s nothing worse than waking up to find you’ve ‘popped’ and have nothing that fits in your wardrobe!

Investing in a couple of good quality maternity pieces is also a really lovely way to celebrate being pregnant. It’s an exciting time, and it can be really special to buy a piece you love to mark the occasion. Whether it’s a dress for your baby shower or a new workout outfit, it’s important to celebrate the joy of growing a tiny human!

First Time Mums

As a first-time mum, it can be tempting to go all out and to buy all of the things. And that’s ok! It’s perfectly natural to be excited and to want to be prepared. To make sure you don’t go too wild, we suggest taking some time to design a capsule wardrobe for your pregnancy. Once you’ve nailed the basics, like tops, denim, leggings and underwear, you can have a bit of fun with the rest of your wardrobe.

Many brands stick with a general theme or colour palette for each season, which makes it easy to select pieces you can mix and match.

We’ve put together our Top 50 Best Sellers page to help you choose some of the pieces you’ll want to prioritise, or visit the Maternity section on our website.

Second Time Mums

If you’re a second-time Mum, you’ll be well aware of the pieces you needed the first time around – and the ones you didn’t! With that hard-earned wisdom, you’ll be able to have a little fun this time around, and maybe even get your firstborn to help you pick out some fun pieces!

We see a lot of second-time Mums making do with the pieces they wore to death the first time around. If it’s feasible, we recommend investing in a few new pieces that offer support and comfort. There’s nothing worse than being 20 weeks and trying to make do with a pair of leggings you wore in your third trimester last time!

We know it’s important to stay active throughout your pregnancy, but regular leggings can only stretch so much! We love these Belly Support Crop Leggings from Blanqi. The super-stretchy belly panel expands with you, providing support while you exercise, and the Oil Blue is just gorgeous!

What are Some Popular Maternity Clothes?

Our first port of call when designing a pregnancy wardrobe is a Belly Support Tank Top: designed with knit-in belly support, this long tank will provide you with extra support and coverage. Wear it on its own or as a base layer for all-day comfort.

A good pair of jeans: whether you like a skinny capri or a boyfriend style, a good pair of maternity jeans designed to grow with you is a great investment, and no more expensive than regular jeans! In those final few weeks, having jeans designed specifically for pregnancy can make a huge difference to your comfort level.

There’s nothing like a gorgeous maxi dress in a pretty pattern. Our pick of the latest styles is the versatile Emmanuelle Nursing Maxi Dress – it can be dressed up or down, and does double duty as the perfect postpartum piece to enjoy once you’ve delivered your little one.

What are Some other Pregnancy Things to Buy?

A good bra is essential for those last few months of pregnancy and the first few months of nursing. Our Karla Bra Bundle is one of our best sellers, and for good reason! Not only is the Karla Bra gorgeous, it’s one of the most comfortable bras in our collection. This wire-free piece is silky soft, has a wide back for expansion and contraction, and adjustable side straps for comfort.

As your body changes, seamless shorts are a fantastic investment. With a contoured under belly panel for gentle support and a longer length to prevent thigh chafing, they’re your secret weapon for staying comfortable when wearing dresses.

Pieces designed for layering, such as the Loren Ribbed Knit Crop Top, look gorgeous over the top of a dress or cami, and show off your bump beautifully.

Feeling excited? You should be! Explore our range of gorgeous maternity wear, from the basics to the beautiful, here.
