EMC: Saving Mothers, Giving Life

Posted on 11/01/2014 in Integrity & Charities & Newsfeed

Saving Mothers, Giving Life (SMGL) is one of Every Mother Counts most committed partnerships.  SMGL is a public-private partnership established in 2012 to accelerate the reduction of needless maternal deaths, truly impact the lives of women around the world and change the face of maternal health.

Focused in Uganda and Zambia - areas identified as among those with the deepest need for maternal health improvement - SMGL has made rapid progress in its first year, dramatically strengthening local health systems in Uganda and Zambia, and saving women’s lives.

* Contributed to reduced maternal mortality ratios by 30% in target districts of Uganda and 35% in target facilities in Zambia;
* Substantially increased facility-based deliveries through community outreach and awareness building by 62% in Uganda and 35% in Zambia;
* Expanded facility staffing and training, ensuring that women receive timely, high quality care;
* Enhanced access to Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (200% increase in facilities offering emergency services in Uganda, 100% increase in facilities offering emergency services in Zambia); and
* Expanded testing and treatment for HIV/AIDS (28% increase in treatment for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Uganda and an 18% increase in Zambia)

Every Mother Counts is a campaign to end preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world. EMC informs, engages, and mobilizes new audiences to take action to improve the health and well-being of girls and women worldwide. Queen Bee Maternity has chosen to become a community and awareness ambassador for Every Mother Counts, in order to help educate audiences about maternal health in Australia. Together, we can make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all moms.
