Shopping for clothing online is always going to be different from physically going into a store and trying outfits on in a fitting room. Based on our nine years of experience in online maternity retail, here are a few pointers to help you safely shop on the web for maternity clothes, and get it right.

Sizes and fittings:

A good maternity wear retail site will have detailed size charts for different styles and each brand, just as we do at Queen Bee. The importance of accurately measuring yourself can’t be overstated! It’s a good idea to check out the stated length of items as well, rather than just going by the photos, as models are often taller than average. Take note of how close-fitting outfits are in the photos, and if you want something a bit less snug, choose a size up. A good store will also answer your measurement queries promptly.

Fabrics:

Stretchy fabrics such as jersey are good for maternity wear as they can grow with you and the fabric content and care instructions should be stated in the product descriptions. Jersey is usually a cotton blend such as cotton/spandex, which makes it more breathable than full synthetics – especially good as you are probably already feeling warmer than usual! Note that if you do look at items in non-stretch fabrics, such as 100% cotton or linen, these will often be a bigger fit all over and may have more of a floaty look to accommodate a pregnant belly full term.

Versatility:

For value-for-money, you want items that will last you throughout the pregnancy and even beyond, and through different seasons. Straight-leg jeans and pants are a good choice as they can be worn with the cuffs turned up during the warmer months.
