Dressing for work doesn’t have to be an issue when you are pregnant. There are many ways around a growing belly in the first few months. In fact you probably won’t have to worry about maternity wear at all in the first couple of months. But when your tummy really starts to blossom, it’s time to think about purchasing a few key items to see you through to the end of the pregnancy.
A Belly Band is great for when you’re not too big, they can be used on your existing pants and you can carry on as normal. It’s best to stick to longer shirts and tops when you are wearing a belly band. In this in-between stage of pregnancy you can also start to wear skirts and dresses made of stretchy fabrics like jersey knits and anything with elastic in the fabric. Buying these items a bigger size than your normal size will also come in handy in the post-baby belly period, when you’re not quite back to normal yet.
You could buy a wrap dress at this stage of your pregnancy as well. Wrap dresses can be worn almost throughout the entire pregnancy and can be adjusted to suit your shape and size. Stick to black. Black can be worn with any coloured accessories and jewellery and can also be worn in the evening for a night out.
In the final stages of pregnancy it is a great idea to purchase a few maternity clothes. Stick to black or neutral tones for the most part so you can mix and match with your existing clothes and accessories.
A great start would be a pair of adjustable black pants. In today’s fashions, a pair of straight legged, low waisted trousers would work well with any top. Discreet panels and quality fabric, will look appropriately smart with existing stretch knits, shirts and wrap tops.
A jersey shift dress is also a great item that you can match with a coloured shirt, unbuttoned underneath. Again, choosing black is wise and can be matched with any coloured accessory and will also cover your bump discreetly. Tying a coloured scarf or ribbon around the top of your blossoming tummy is a great accent.
A wrap blouse or maternity wrap dress in a block colour will also be a great addition to your maternity wear wardrobe. These dresses can be adjusted to stretch around your belly at the end of the pregnancy and will still look smart and professional. As you need extra coverage, a complimentary coloured cami or singlet worn underneath will add a dash of colour.
Finally, an absolute must for maternity work outfits are some accessories. In summer, lovely lightweight, cotton scarves with fringing or bright patterns will add colour, flair and detract a little from your growing belly. Chunky, brightly coloured beads will also draw the eye up and add a dynamic edge to a black dress. Hats, chunky knit scarves and bright cardis will also add colour and polish to a winter wardrobe.
