How to Plan a Stress-Free Family Beach Outing

A day at the beach can be a great way to spend time with your family, but there are plenty of factors that can make it extremely stressful. Here are some tips to remember to make it as stress-free as possible.

Pack the Essentials

Firstly, pack the essentials you will need. Swimming costumes, towels, kids' beach towel hoodie, an umbrella, etc. These essentials will make or break your beach day, and not having them can be a real pain.

If you are planning to be there for more than just a quick swim, pack everything you need to keep you and your kids comfortable for several hours.

Don’t Forget Comfort Must-Haves

Along with the essentials, you should also take a few comfort must-haves. A pop-up tent is perfect for napping and getting out of the sun, beach chairs are often more comfortable than the sand, and a handheld fan can keep you cool on hotter days.

These extras aren’t completely necessary, but once again, if you are planning on spending several hours at the beach, you won’t regret bringing these things along with you.

Snacks & Drinks

Snacks and drinks are another must for a beach day. Swimming and playing will make you thirsty and hungry, and the last thing you want is for your kids to get dehydrated or cranky from not being able to eat.

Additionally, not every beach has a store or restaurant nearby, and unlike adults, kids often can’t wait the extra hour or two to get something to eat or drink on the way home.

Have Extra Frozen Water

Another great idea is to have a few big bottles of frozen water in the car. You can drink them if need be, but they can also be used to wash sandy feet and hands, splash on faces to cool down, or serve as makeshift ice packs on very hot days.

Go Early or Late

Timing is crucial for an enjoyable beach day, especially if you are planning to go to a popular spot. The one thing to always remember is that beaches will, more often than not, be at their busiest from about 10 or 11 am to 3 or 4 pm, although this can be later on weekends.

Because of this, it is best to go as early as possible or wait until around dinner time. Considering you are more than likely going to be going in the Summer, when the sun rises early and sets late, you will get great sunshine no matter what time you choose.

Set Up Your Own Zone

Another great tip, especially if you have smaller kids with you, is to create a zone. In simple terms, this is a small bit of the beach that you semi-enclose using your pop-up tent, chairs, umbrella, etc.

Not only does this ensure everything you own is in your eye line, but the middle can be used for relaxing, playing, etc., and your kids don’t have to go too far on their own.

Beach Toys

While it is obvious to many, you can’t visit the beach without bringing along some beach toys. Sand buckets and spades, beach paddles and balls, a kite, etc, are all perfect for the beach.

Considering the amount of space you have to work with, you can also bring along a volleyball net if you are going with friends. Just remember, not everyone wants to go to the beach simply to swim or sit in the sun.

Bathroom Needs

Once again, if you have younger children, it is important to be aware of the bathroom situation. Many less popular beaches won’t have bathrooms on the beach or nearby, so you need to be prepared for when a child needs to use the bathroom.

Travel potties and swim diapers are brilliant for very young kids and can save you a lot of time and hassle.

Opt for Beaches with Extras

While it is tempting to go to a quieter, less populated, and more remote beach, more often than not, said beach won’t have any extras. However, these extras can oftentimes be lifesavers or ensure your day goes off without a hitch.

Opt for beaches that are near restaurants and facilities, near stores if you need to do some shopping, or that offer rental services such as lounger and umbrella rentals, surfboard or bodyboard rentals, etc.

Remember What Might Bother Your Kids

Finally, when planning for the day and on the day itself, always remember to put yourself in your child's shoes and consider what might be bothering them. For instance, being a bit too hot and a little thirsty isn’t a big deal to most adults, but it can be really upsetting for a child.

This doesn’t mean you have to give your child 100% of your attention every second you are there and ensure every small need of theirs is met, but it does mean you shouldn’t ignore every complaint they may have, even if you think it is silly or a bit overblown. Everything can affect a child differently than it does an adult, and you want to ensure these small things don’t ruin their mood or day.
