Finding Clothes that Fit During Pregnancy

Posted on 21/09/2012 in Style

Most expecting mums have the same complaint when it comes to their
maternity fashion: it’s hard to find clothes that are comfortable and that fit their constantly changing bodies. It’s true that finding clothes that fit perfectly can be very difficult during pregnancy, simply because you can never tell what will fit you until you arrive at that size. Of course, at that point, you won’t have any clothes to wear! To avoid this conundrum and to prepare your wardrobe for your dynamic body, check out the following tips for finding maternity clothes that fit.

Stick to maternity wear at first

During your first trimester, your body won’t change too much, so don’t give into the temptation to buy non-maternity clothes that are a couple sizes larger that what you would normally wear. If you do this, then you will be subjected to wearing baggy and ill-fitting clothes when it’s only your belly that will be growing. Maternity wear is specifically tailored with extra fabric and details that keep you comfortable, such as stretchy belly panels or empire waist ties, which flatter your body as it changes.

Use your regular size

What many women don’t realise is that maternity sizes are the same as regular clothing sizes. That is, if you’re normally a size 10, then shop for maternity clothes that are also a size 10. Manufacturers have already factored in a growing belly into the sizes so that it takes all the guesswork out of shopping for you. This system works best for the first half of your pregnancy when your overall weight gain is minimal.

Don’t buy everything at once

Talk to any woman who has been pregnant before and she will probably tell you not to buy too many new items at once. Especially if you are pregnant for the first time, chances are good that you won’t know exactly what your body will do throughout the nine months. In addition to not knowing how much extra weight you will gain and when, one day you may decide you even want a different style to improve your comfort level. Basically, a lot can change, so only buy a few things at a time to ensure you have the best fit possible.

Use plenty of layers

If you’re concerned about fit and comfort, your best option is to get plenty of layers that you can work with as your body grows and changes. For instance, a nice camisole underneath your flowy tops may be just the thing you need to reign in any cleavage you’re not used to, and long cardigans can be paired with just about any T-shirt and belt combination, and will always fit no matter how big your belly gets.

Buying maternity clothes isn’t rocket science -- it can be far more complicated than that! Since your body will change in its own unique way, it’s important to be smart about your purchases, and ensure you get something comfortable that makes you feel good.
