EMC: Every Girl Counts

Posted on 6/11/2013 in Integrity & Charities & Newsfeed

From the moment a child is born, a certain amount of his or her future is pre-determined. Who he or she becomes is certainly a matter of personality and opportunity, but it’s also the result of the country, family and socioeconomic class that child is born in. Those factors will, to some extent dictate how he or she is raised and educated, what toys he’ll play with, friends she’ll have and what expectations, goals and dreams await his or her adulthood. If that child is born a girl, she’ll have an uphill battle, no matter where she’s born. Sure, boy children have it rough in many families all over the world, but in society as a whole, girl children have it rougher.

In some parts of the world, being born a girl places a child at a huge disadvantage. For millions of girls, it means she will not go to school. She will marry during childhood and have children of her own before she’s physically old enough for pregnancy and childbirth. Many won’t survive and many others will face pregnancy-related injuries that will devastate them for the rest of their lives.

Read the stories of girls from around the world as they open their hearts about their hopes, challenges and plans for the future and pain from the past.

Every Mother Counts is a campaign to end preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world. EMC informs, engages, and mobilizes new audiences to take action to improve the health and well-being of girls and women worldwide. Queen Bee Maternity has chosen to become a community and awareness ambassador for Every Mother Counts, in order to help educate audiences about maternal health in Australia. Together, we can make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all moms.
